I rarely paint from photos but seeing as its too darn cold to paint outdoors, I painted this watercolor from a photo I took. The challenge is how to capture the essence of ‘being there’. When I paint in pleinair all my senses are activated. The breeze on my skin, the smell of the air, sounds, shifting light, all these nuances are conveyed through my brush onto the canvas. Perhaps by now, after months of winter in CT, I know that the cool blue of ultramarine blue and white spells icy cold to the touch, and the rays of morning light on the horizon are a hint of warmth on a cold winter day..
