I stayed away from the Big Island of Hawaii for six weeks during the the volcanic eruption in 2018. During that time I spent hours glued to news, photos and videos of the dramatic destruction and creation formed by the massive lava flow happening near my corner of the island. I started painting watercolors from the images I watched on the internet. The ‘laze’ in particular fascinated me. Laze is the mix of steam and volcanic vapors as the lava flows into the ocean, creating a billowing lava haze. In this painting I focused on the massive amount of laze and colors created by the heat of the lava as it hit the water.
