Hau’oli Makahiki Hou. It means Happy New Year in Hawaiian.
They say that whatever you do on the first day of the year is what you’ll be doing for the rest of the year. I made a point to get into the ocean and enjoy the waves first thing, right after picking fresh tangerines and oranges from the abundant fruit trees in my neighborhood. Then of course I painted. I invited my painting buddy and we drove a short distance to the 17 mile marker along the Red Road. The afternoon light was spectacular with tradewinds and sunlight illuminating the lava coast and ocean swells. I painted three small watercolors as I soaked in the paradise that surrounded me. May the rest of the year be as inspiring.
