Bliss is one of my favorite paintings from my parents series. During my parents’ last years of life, my mother’s dementia had made her become more distant and less physically demonstrative toward my father. He accepted her behavior but wasn’t happy about the lack of affection she showed him. However, when I began taking photographs of my parents for my painting series, something wonderful occurred. In front of the camera my mother started to show more signs of affection for my father. She would hug him, kiss him, and generally became more playful. The two of them, as well as myself enjoyed our special intimate photo sessions. At one point my father actually thanked me for ‘returning’ his wife to him again. Bliss is one of those moments when Kiki nuzzled my father, kissing him on the cheek. The smile on my father’s face speaks for itself.
