As a young artist, I became very interested in cubism. In Lillies I took a classic still life subject… a vase, flowers, a shell and a cloth to begin developing basic concepts of cubist space. Here I began to restructure the flower and other objects as planes of space. The painting integrates the natural space of the still life with simpler, flatter planes that creates a pattern of overlapping planes that eventually includes the surface plane of the painting itself.
