Rough Seas. The Pacific Ocean is always a bit rough along the southern coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. On this particular day the ocean was even more turbulent than normal. I chose acrylics because I had recently started painting again with acrylic paints and was curious how I might handle them outdoors for my plein air painting. The surface of this canvas had already been prepared with some deep blues and swirling textures from a previous painting, so it provided a great base to add my new impressions of the large waves and crashing surf of the water. This made for some surprising textures that worked well with layers of new paint strokes and splashes. When painting the waves and activity of the ocean I think it’s helpful to dig into the feeling of the movement and paint from that place inside of us.
