Monarch, 36″x36″, acrylic on canvas
I began this painting outdoors in my tropical garden observing directly from nature. Yet, during my artistic process I began abstracting the forms while also developing flatter, more defined shapes. Eventually a shape emerged within the flora and foliage of my canvas, so I just went with the flow of my brush and a monarch butterfly found its way into the painting. Not quite en pleinair, and also not quite a pure abstraction. Painting is really a process of listening and following one’s intuition.
