The day just before our shelter-at-home order began in Hawaii, I received a request for a commission painting. My client wanted a larger size format than the size I normally paint my landscapes. So, I ordered the stretcher bars and got them that same afternoon. Thus began my pandemic painting.

Fortunately, on the Big Island, I could easily maintain social distancing while being able to drive down to my painting spot alongside the Red Road to paint en pleinair.  I painted outdoors about ten times over the next three months, adding detail and fine-tuning the painting. I named it Ke ala ʻula, which translated literally means the Flaming Road.
