Description
Ironwood Trees holds a special memory for me. I was fortunate in life to have known and painted along side a special friend and gifted painter, the late Arthur Johnsen, who was famous for painting beautiful views of the Big Island of Hawaii. During one of my visits to Hawaii, I finally decided to commission a landscape painting from Arthur for myself. Little did anyone know it would be the last year of Arthur’s life.
We decided that the Ironwood trees along the coastal cliffs near his home in Puna would be lovely. I thought he would paint on his own but he insisted I come and paint with him! He handed me an easel, canvas, oil paints and brushes. Ironwood Trees is the result of our day painting together, under the Ironwood trees on the red lava cliffs of the Big Island.
