17 Mile Marker #2
One of the most popular locations to paint en pleinair on the Big Island of Hawaii is at the coastline at 17 Mile Marker on the Kapoho Kalapana Beach Road, aka Red Road. A row of palm trees line the old Red Road, just feet away from the Pacific surf that pounds the black lava coast. I love standing on cliffs edge painting the jagged cliffs while the waves spray me with ocean mist. It’s a dynamic spot and colors change drastically depending on time of day. I painted this late in the day when the ocean reflects the late yellow sunlight.
