Pleinair Oil Landscapes
What exactly is pleinair painting?
Pleinair painting is the painting process by which an artist schlepps all their art supplies… paints, easel, brushes, etc. to a spot outdoors where they often combat adverse elements of nature… wind, rain, mosquitos or scorching sun in order for them to paint directly from the nature.
Often I paint a la prima, meaning I try to finish my canvas in a single sitting. The light changes quickly and rain can put a real damper on a painting session. Wind and mosquitos can be challenging. Still, when that magical moment beckons, when the clouds absorb the sublime hues of the setting sun or when the ocean fills with a dazzling pattern of reflected light, my heart is called to paint this fleeting beauty.
