Beyond, oil on linen, 18″ x 24″
Since the end of last summer I knew I would paint this as the final painting in My Parents series. My father spent his last days in a morphine induced dream state at home in bed. My siblings, myself, my mother and close friends took turns during those days to visit and speak quietly and soothingly to Harold while he ‘slept’. In this painting, Beyond, my mother Kiki sat for a long time encouraging my father to get better, unaware that he was indeed dying.
The urgency with which she tried to reach Harold, gripping his hands and leaning into an impenetrable barrier during his transition moved me the most.
